4 out of 5 stars An admirable book althoughl slightly outdated   May 26, 2006

This book was very thought provoking and anybody who worries about the environment should read it.
I would reccommend that anybody reading this book also seperately research some of the claims, and not believe every claim.
The book challenges the entire chemical industry of the 1960's and, although some of the science is a little outdated (it has now been acknowledged that DDT does not cause any kind of cancer) one must forgive the author, since she was one of the first people to challenge the "all knowing" scientists of the chemical industry and her mistakes were out of ignorance, rather than (as many of her critics would say) out of a desire to cause panic. We now know that a "silent spring" is unlikely, but the environment can be damaged by any powerful pesticideand we msut stop and thyink for a second about how the chemicals we spray on our roses affect nearby animal and insect populations.

A really eye opening book - if you have studied this subject yourself or have never read a thing on the evils of pollution and the real dangers to us all before, this book is a must-read. Everyone can benifit from just knowing some of the facts laid out here. A very well written and extremely read-able book BUY IT!

This is one the most amazing books I have ever read.

Rachel Carson could see the incredible damage being done by the massive use of chemical insecticides and pesticides.

Personally I will eat nothing but organic food from now on. The sad thing is that many of these chemicals are still in use some 40 years after Rachel wrote this book. The story is beautifully written, and well laid out.

Trust me read it....

5 out of 5 stars Still Applicable To Our 21st Century   March 21, 2002

This is the definitive book about ecological issues and is sadly just as applicable today as it was when Rachel Carsen wrote it, except that there are even more eco-problems facing our ravaged planet, such as global warming, the ozone hole, high UV-radiation etc. We clearly did not pay enough heed to her caveats! Perhaps this is because Silent Spring is mainly an superbly written informational book, which appeals to the converted, but not so much to those who prefer lighter reading material. I mention this since I just finished reading a most informative, yet thoroughly enjoyable science-fiction eco-novel, ACCUSED BY FACET-EYES (scientist-author, C.B.Don). In Silent Spring, Rachel Carsen mentions the terrible effects of pesticides sprayed on orchards and on the decimated honeybee pollinator colonies. Well, "Accused By Facet-Eyes" takes Silent Spring one step further. It is a well researched contemporary sci-fi eco-novel, which presents specific honeybee as well as other pressing global eco-issues, but in a heart-touching, thought-provoking storyline, which I feel could appeal to the audiences not as yet reached by Silent Spring. Both books have a strong eco-message and though separated by several decades, attack the same eco-problem from different aspects. Silent Spring and Accused By facet-Eyes are rare eco-books, indeed, both truly worthwhile reading and reflecting upon!

5 out of 5 stars Has anything changed?   September 2, 2000

I read the original version of this book published in 1962, and I believe this book should be compulsory reading not only for every person who says that s/he cares for the environment, but also for those that say they don't care. Maybe it'll make them care. The book is a strong indictment against the chemical industry and the havoc that their products create in every part of the world (including our cosy homes), about the dangers of more and more insects and pests becoming resistent to chemicals and a strong call to look for alternatives that do not damage all our lives (animal, plant and human). But when I read the newspapers, not much appears to have changed in almost 40 years: many of us (especially politicians) still live in the back pockets of the chemical industry! After all, money and jobs are more important than saving what is left, isn't it?
