Possibly the best kids' book ever written. June 27, 1999 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I first read Lizard Music in third grade; I had found a dusty 1970s edition at the back of the classroom bookshelf and was hooked immediately upon opening it. I searched school libraries for it for a few years thereafter, invariably finding it, before finally buying the thing in sixth or seventh grade; I have re-read it at least once a year ever since.Lizard Music is a perfect blend of characterization, adventure, comedy--and yes, even literature--that, though directed at kids, is nonetheless great for any age. Pinkwater's cleverly constructed plot and style will pull even the most reluctant reader into a slightly surrealistic tale of mystery, intrigue, and chickens that can be read again and again and again and again and again, ad infinitum.
This was one of my favorite books I've ever read January 2, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I laughed so hard, I couldn't talk! My parents loved it, too, and they are 43 and 42 years old. I liked how the Chicken Man had like ten Dutch painter names, and how all the lizards were named Reynold. In the House of Memory, I liked how the guide, Reynold (not the first one), shouted "think of a corn muffin" to Victor. Read this book!
READ THIS and you'll never regret it! December 21, 1998 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Mr. Pinkwater is a genius! I must have read this book a million times, and I am only thirteen. This and Alan Mendelsohn: Boy From Mars are my favorite books of Mr. Pinkwater's. This book sparked interests in my friends and I of lizards and corn muffins. Every time I read this I enjoy the adventures of The Chicken Man (a.k.a. Charlie Swan and a lot of other things), his hen Claudia, and Victor, a (somewhat) ordinary kid. I love the humorous happenings (i.e., the Lizards doing a take-off of Groucho Marx's You Bet Your Life) and the twisted plot! This book is for EVERYONE!
Yes I like this book because it was really fun to read. December 2, 1998 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I kind of like the book because I like when victor took care of himself while his sister went to camp and his mom and dad was on vacation. When everyone was gone he always cooked for himself. He went out to the city and met and called the chicken man and Victor always seen him on TV. I recommend this to all kids my age which is 11.

I first read this when I was in my late teens. I'm in my early thirties now and still enjoy revisiting this old friend. It's a fantastic, surreal bit of literature, tapping both the real and surreal aspects of every kid's life. Remember: Think of a corn muffin. CH
