Kester's book and his ideas about contemporary practices is a joy to read. Firstly it is lucid and straightforward and without much postmodern/philosophical jargon. He cleverly puts together many like minded practices from artists and collectives around the world which aim to improve peoples lives in the real world, one riven with limiting life opportunities and social exclusion and sees the interchange of ideas and thoughts between artists and the public as a valid tool for social/political expression. It isnt all about the artist having the grand idea and vision and then imposing it on society, then asking for oodles of cash from pompous high minded galleries and gaining the requisite exposure and media profile to enable the next lucrative project to come along. No, art is there to serve and help people in many different ways to speak the truth on social ills etc and not to be exploited by cultural elitists and vulgar commercialism.
