| Customer Reviews:
Very enjoyable read, very diligently researched March 22, 2002 Why did the American bison almost become extinct in the late 19th century? Here's the answer. Isenberg's book draws on an enormous range of sources but distils them into a simple, cogent argument. What is particularly praiseworthy is the way that he doesn't suggest it was purely and simply a matter of irresponsible hunters (mainly "Euroamericans", as he puts it) massacring the herds. Environmental factors, such as drought, disease and the introduction of cattle into the plains, also played their part. But these factors blended with the role played by humans, both native Indians and "Euroamericans". One cannot really separate the environmental from the human factors: both were at work simultaneously. A top-notch study.
