Wonderful photographs spoilt by spreading over 2 pages. May 23, 2001 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is an excellent book. Over the years I have purchased all the others, and think myself lucky to have such photographs available when I want them. However, this year, sadly, the BBC have rather spoilt the usual quality of the photographs by spreading some of them over two pages, and managing to downgrade the excellence of them. For me, it has taken away some of the pleasure of looking at this book. The previous editions have not used this technique so much, and therefore are that much more enjoyable. I sincerely hope that Portfolio 11 will not be like this one.
Spoilt by photographs over 2 pages March 29, 2001 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I thoroughly enjoyed the exhibition at the Natural History Museuem, but the format of the book spoils many of the images by printing them over more than one page. The quality of the photographs is excellent.
One of the most visually appealing books of the year February 9, 2001 Being a massive photography and design enthusiast it is so nice that the publishers of this book have decided to improve the dated designs of previous editions. In the past the book only appealed to a small group of nature photographers like me - now so many more will find it appealing, get to see the wonders of the natural world and hopefully appreciate how precious it is.
Good, but ..... January 3, 2001 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The photos in this book are, as ever in this series, excellent. Howevever, in this form many are spoiled by being printed across the spine. The winning photograph itself is done no favours at all by this, with one of the polar bears being cut in two. Let's hope that next year's book goes back to a format that gives the photographs the justice they deserve.
Wonderful photographs and a wonderful book November 1, 2000 The quality of the photographs in this years edition are as good as ever and I was pleasantly surprised by the new design of the book. The diversity of the images and skill of the photographers - from the wonderful cover shot to the intriguing pictures of composition and form - make it easy to spend an age just leafing through this book. I was interested to read the other reviewers comments on page layout however I feel that the new design really brings the book up to date.
