5 out of 5 stars A lifetime's expertise neatly condensed   April 8, 2003

There have been many instruction books on drawing birds, and there are many people who say that drawing is simply drawing - whatever the chosen subject. This book goes beyond mere instruction and shows how an understanding of the subject is key to their successful depiction. Yes, it is possible to teach how to draw birds kit-form style (start with two ovals and work from there); and yes, there is some similarity between drawing birds and drawing people or other subjects. But if you want to get life into your drawings, you need something from a person with a flair for the subject. This is what makes this book stand out from the crowd of other instruction manuals. Busby has devoted his life to birds and to art. He really does understand the subject. He tackles the tricky stuff - anatomy, flight etc - but also gets into what is important for the sake of the picture by seeing what's important to observe and what's important for the bird itself.

If you want a book that covers the basic kit and instructions, try some of the offerings by Peter Partington. If you want something that covers the American photo-realistic approach, look elsewhere. But if you want a book that you will turn back to time and again, that combines art expertise with bird expertise, seek this book out.
