Easily the best book for beginners October 5, 2008 I couldn't knit at all, so got hold of a few books. Of all the ones I tried, this was by far the easiest to follow, with the clearest instructions. It's also funny and down-to earth. I'd recommend getting a DVD as well, so that you can see what you're supposed to be doing. I got 'The Art of Knitting' which again, is clear. With the help of those two, I'm happily knitting now!
Tired old feminist politics August 9, 2008 0 out of 5 found this review helpful
I thought we had left Ms Stoller's particular brand of political feminism behind back in the 1970s but sadly it would appear that she is stuck in the past and regurgitating the old, tired, strident politics and trying to tie them to a great craft. There are much better books on knitting around which do not find it necessary to bludgeon the reader with outdated politics on every page.
Great Re-Introduction for the Lapsed Knitter July 2, 2008 I havent knit a stitch since I was ten years old, so I had completely forgotten everything about knitting. This book is a great re-introduction to the knitting basics and I found the diagrams and descriptions really easy to follow. The authors writing style includes lots of personal knitting experience stories which are inspirational and it also makes the book a good bedtime read too! I read the book on a Sunday night, its now Wednesday and i'm halfway through my first scarf, and thoroughly enjoying it!
Perfect for branching out March 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I knew the basics of knitting before I purchased this book but hadn't progressed beyond making stripey garter stitch scarves. This book was well suited to my needs, and I still go back to it for reference and to re-create my favourite designs. The introduction is interesting and provides an insight into the world of knitting as well as giving detailed technical instructions, with plenty of diagrams and photographs included along the way.
The patterns are perfect for a beginner - intermediate level knitter and the range of skills required are varied. There's everything from simple scarves and hats, to using circular needles, cabling, colourwork and socks. An experienced knitter might find this useful for the classic sweater patterns, but it is definitely intended for someone who is learning and getting to know the ropes. The book is clearly written and easy to understand. You'll be itching to get started on some of the beautiful projects and this is a great book to have in your collection.
Very good and educational January 9, 2008 With this book you can begin to learn to knit, go ahead and become advanced in quite a short period of time. Plenty of nice patterns in there and very good explanations on various stitches.
