Quality issues March 21, 2005 9 out of 30 found this review helpful
Sadly this book failed to excite - I was looking forward to seeing inovations in digital manipulation of images but it missed the mark. I work with images and I have to say that the printing quality of the book didn't help at all - but the images often just looked a mess. I know this sounds harsh, but a friend who is just an amateur photographer said "if my photos turned out like those I'd be too embarased to show them to anyone". Sadly, I bet the original photographs were good - shame.
Ground-breaking January 14, 2005 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
This book is just incredible - it's ground-breaking. It's the best book of wildlife photographs I have ever seen. Every now and then a pioneering book comes along that influences our attitudes. Bloom's pictures are so highly charged that they draw you right in, and some of the eye contact is brilliant. He has blown photography right open with his artistic vision. It's beautifully printed, and maybe even a bit low-priced for a book so large. There's a strong message in the book, urging us to appreciate and respect wildlife.
Very disapointing January 8, 2005 16 out of 27 found this review helpful
As a avid wildlife photographer myself this is one book i had been looking forward to for a long time and boy what a let down it has proven to be. The book starts off well with some stunning images taken in Africa sadly that where my praise for this book ends. As soon as the Africa section is over the pictures are very obviously digitaly manipulated. Not only are they digitaly manipulated but they have been done to such a standard it sticks out even worse than a sore thumb. Personaly i have no problem with digital enhancement but these just ruin what could have been a great book. Another gripe i have with this book is the paper appears very cheap and i have had two copies now both with the same problem of the corners of the pages torn off which is very annoying. I have lost alot of respect for Steve Bloom and his work after seeing this book and i would suggest anybody thinking of purchasing it look at Jungles or Eye To Eye by Frans Lanting instead. Maybe Steve himself should have a look at them and see how it should be done
Stunning pictures November 4, 2004 28 out of 31 found this review helpful
I first read about Untamed in an airline in-flight magazine, then saw an article about it in a photography magazine. These preview articles could not fully prepare me for the scale of the actual book and I was bowled over when it arrived. Primarily a beautiful photography book, it is huge, filled with the most awesome images. Bloom has captured something of the essence of life. More importantly, it is a moving and powerful statement for the protection of the environment. Whether you look at the pictures of Antarctica, the endangered tigers in India or the polar bears in Canada, you are intuitively aware of the danger of global warming and the importance of preserving the world's natural environments. Bloom's artistic skill and sensitivity have created a volume I will always treasure.
magnificent November 4, 2004 15 out of 17 found this review helpful
Magnificent. Steve Bloom is a true artist with the camera. He manages to blur the lines separating species...you can almost sense what the animals are experiencing. What is so remarkable is that this is a book by only one photographer - one whose total dedication to the environment is clearly evident in his work. His use of light, colour and a masterly photographic technique have resulted in a body of evocative work which left me spellbound. It's a big book, with photographs from the far reaches of the earth. It is clearly Bloom's best and most comprehensive work to date, and it shows a maturity of style as well as an understanding of both art and the environment. The mere size of the book forces you to take it slowly and give it the time it deserves. Bravo.
