laugh out loud December 3, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I read this book to my 8 year old son. He laughed 'till he cried. Me too!
His comment..."I never used to enjoy reading until I read Mr Gumm."
It's the most bizarre, funny and imaginative book I've read in a long time. Cross Monty Python with Roald Dahl. Here's the basic plot...a grumpy and very untidy old man is forced to keep a pristine garden because if it gets untidy he gets hit over the head by a frying pan wielding fairy. When a dog messes up his garden, Mr Gum is forced to take drastic action. See what I mean about bizarre? But it really works. It's absolutely brilliant
And the other Mr Gumms are great too
hilariously silly. November 26, 2007 yes, yes, i know i'm too old to be delving into these slightly random books, but i'm sorry, i can't help it! my sister had it from a bookclub- i couldn't resist. and i'm glad too, it was absolutely fantastic! i shouldn't be saying this really, but it's my guilty pleasure! i love it. (it's the utter randomness that does it) silly plot, stupid characters, and then i'm rolling across the floor. right, now i've flushed that out of my system, let me go and find the next terry pratchett... oh, but i did enjoy it!
I've read a few kids books this summer, this one is the best August 18, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book can be enjoyed by small kids and big kids. It is flipping brilliant and cannot recommend it enough, but I'll try - buy it buy it buy it buy it! The humour is wonderfully surreal and just laugh out loud. Like a reviewer above, I too will be watching "Bag of Sticks". If I were Joey from Friends, I would rather read this book than eat a meatball sub. I think you know what I'm saying!!!. Once more, buy it!
Mr Gum talks! August 17, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We've had this CD a little over a week. My three children (2 boys aged 9 and 8 and a girl aged 6) can recite huge chunks of it. They already loved the Mr Gum books but this adds a whole new dimension. There are songs to be sung (don't forget the ostrich noises!) and sound effects to marvel at. I wondered how the title would work in audio, given that the books are such visual treats but I needn't have feared. My three have listened to it in the car but also, and this is rare with an audio book, in the house. I am hoping that the other two Mr Gum titles will quickly follow in audio.
a genius author! June 27, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Doesn't matter if you haven't got kids, go and buy all Stanton's books anyway. Have had evenings literally howling with laughter at these genius inventions. Something was needed to replace the quirkiness of the Lemony Snicket books - this is definitely it!
