5 out of 5 stars BRILL BOOK   May 17, 2008

Michael Morpurgo has once again enchanted me with this brilliant book. This is really a breath-taking read and I am not just exaggerating - it is actually splendid stuff! I would nominate this book for the Whitbread Award, although the author has won it many a times, or the Smarties Award.

The foundation stone of this story is the curse which came to the people of Samson, one of the Isles of Scilly, and how two young children - an inseparable pair of friends, a boy called Daniel and a girl called Gracie - and the supposedly mad Birdman of Bryher manage to redeem the curse some thirty years later.

I would rate this book 10/ 10 (it is on my favourites list) and would recommend it to older children and Morpurgo writes clever, complex, and thought-provoking books.

4 out of 5 stars Haunting and Endearing   August 1, 2007

I feel that all the other reviewers have described this book very well and I don't need to add anything as far as the book is concerned. I will however, like point out how well Michael Morpurgo narrates this book. His soft accent fits well with this haunting, slightly melancholy story. I was captivated from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars This book ROCKS!   May 1, 2007

I think it was a lovely, mysterious, exciting book! The characters were really cool and the book was written so well. The story is very interesting because it has ghosts and curses but it isn't very scary, only if you read it at night!!!

I read this book in class with my classmates and I really recommend it to anyone who likes reading! When I was reading it I couldn't ever stop because there were exciting and fun things happening all the time!

5 out of 5 stars Take my advice!   November 2, 2006

If you like reading adventure and suspense, with added folklore and curses, then this is the ideal read for you. Set in the Isles of Scilly, this book charts the friendship of Gracie and Daniel as they build up a relationship with the mysterious Birdman. Despite warnings to stay far away from him, they start to meet him and commence a friendship. The consequences of this are far reaching and affect all the islanders.

This is a gripping and exciting story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. If you like this book, then you might like to consider The Horse and his Boy by CS Lewis.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful!   August 2, 2006

This is a delightful story and is indicative of the excellent children's books that Michael Morpurgo writes. Set in the Isles of Scilly, children Daniel and Gracie are warned to keep away from the strange old man dubbed 'The Birdman'. Fate plays her hand however, as the children build up a friendship with the Birdman, whose odd ways are explained by deafness. Their friendship is not welcomed by all and the story builds to a climax with superstition, World War I and island desperation all coming in to play.
