5 out of 5 stars His best novel yet   April 2, 2008
I've always liked Dean Koontz, as he can be relied on for an entertaining (if sometimes a bit too far-fetched) read.If you have read a lot of his novels, the themes and ideas can start getting predictable and sometimes the characters are a bit one-dimensional. However, with this novel he has certainly excelled himself.

He takes time to set the background and establish the personalities and unique story of each character before bringing them all together at the Tranquility Motel. He draws you in very quickly because you become intrigued by the characters various and strange behaviours. I guessed early on what the mystery behind it all was but there were still little twists I had not expected and the book gripped me from beginning to end.

My only critcism is that the story has a very rosy view of human nature and I tend to think that, in reality, the "CISG report" mentioned in the story would have been right about humanity needing time to adjust! You will see what I mean if you read it. Having said this, the fantastical is what Mr Koontz is all about and this book is nothing if not thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Not up to his usual Standard!   March 10, 2008
Firstly I will justify 4 stars. I would give this book 3 Stars but I am an avid Koontz fan and feel this is just an "off" book.

I really enjoyed this book at the start, it seemed to be going somewhere and I really wanted to know what would happened next. As I always do with his books I try to predict what will happen next. As the book progressed however I was sadly disappointed and not that I was right in the first place. I have read many Dean Koontzs books but the ending was shocking unlike him. Unimaginative, unbelievable and frankly ludicrous. If you do decide to read this leave the ending to your imagination and stop just after they start working things out when the group of "strangers" are all together!

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing   February 23, 2008
I have been a fan of Koontz since I read Velocity and I really enjoyed reading this one, although i prefer his murder books most. I found this book to be utterly intriguing.
Because Koontz makes his characters so interesting and believable you care about what happens to them. I found the pages turning without having noticed the time because I wanted desperately to find out what was happening to them!
The suspense, characters and mystery are what make this a really compelling read.

3 out of 5 stars A good read.   January 1, 2008

This book passes the time. It offers suspense and it is very much a thriller. Not horror. I was never felt any fear, only in a couple of scenes in the book. THe plot, I could guess some of it, although there are some twists. The writing is well done, although not quite as good as Stephen Kings'. I don't think I will read another Koontz book, not because he isn't worthy to read; but he isn't really my type of writer. If you like science fiction thrillers, then this is a book for you to read.

5 out of 5 stars Another superb Koontz book   April 14, 2007

Havung read all 40 Dean Koontz books I feel I am in a position to be able to judge pretty well the qualities of his work. And this one is definately one of his best. For me it is his best book along with Watchers. It is a longer book than most of his (over 700 pages compared to the average 500) but I never lost interest and it kept me hooked chapter after chapter. If you haven't read this book do. You will not be dissappointed !!
