faggots with ATTITUDE October 7, 2007 The late great James Robert Baker's last novel is a high-octane journey into the psyche of one Dean Seagrave as he drives round the Los Angeles area looking for his possibly psychotic ex-lover, Pablo. Seagrave believes Pablo is "an emotional serial killer" who deliberately takes lover after lover, only to destroy them. An update of the epistolatory novel, the book takes the form of a series of cassette tapes recorded by Seagrave as he makes his search for Pablo, and finds increasingly disturbing "evidence" about him... Baker exploits the trope of the 'unreliable narrator' to devastating effect here (no spoilers!) and uses Seagrave as the mouthpiece for his familiar, uncompromising take on the U.S gay subculture. His wit is angry, unerring and refreshingly un-politically correct. The man has a point to make, too. His exposition of sexual addiction and so-called "sex-positivity" is brilliant, disturbing and hard to ignore. The book is in fact a dark satire - very, very dark - perhaps on balance more disturbing than funny. One of Baker's very best efforts.
Great! Even if you're not a gay sex addict on speed October 4, 2004 The pace of the story is fast; almost cartoon-like. The story is violent and sometimes simultaneously funny. The writing keeps you involved and turning the pages to see what will happen next. If you buy this and enjoy it, you will also enjoy "Adrenaline"
