5 out of 5 stars Magdelena Magnetism!   August 2, 2000
Bodio maybe a passionate outdoorsman, but having read this astonishing book, I believe he would make a great travel writer. His writing certainly whets the appetite to visit his beloved southwest. I may have never visited New Mexico - but I feel drawn to the unspoilt open spaces, friendly people and diverse cultural value of the place. I hope it survives!

5 out of 5 stars An "Eagle's Eye" on Southwestern US Culture   August 2, 2000
Steve Bodio has an eagle's eye for detail. He displays a passionate care for the natural world which is the result of a hunter's interconnectedness with his environment. His approach naturally stewards both society and environment in close harmony towards a more sustainable future. We should learn from this to take heed of the consequences of our individual and collective actions on the wider world, as nature will always outlive human excess.

5 out of 5 stars Perceptive essays of the changing West and all its creatures   April 16, 1999
Stephen Bodio presents a compelling, thoughtful series of essays mostly about New Mexico and the western backcountry. This is the southwest one does not learn about from the tourist guides, nor the resort towns. I have walked thousands of miles of "Bodio Country" and his insights of the land and its people are quite poignant.
