Step by step Magic October 7, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a small but very thick book, rather it was larger and thinner (be easier to handle). That being said, this is definitely THE BOOK you should get. It takes you through close-up magic through stage magic. Effects, secrets and pre-perations, how to perform all the tricks in a simple step-by-step process with diagrams, and finish's up with comments and suggestions.
A quick note: if you get this book, do not get his other book "Mark Wilson's Complete Course In Magic". You only need one of these two, the have almost the exact same information.
New to magic? Buy this book March 11, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
For the price this book is an excellent purchase for anyone who is not sure what type of magic they like. There are so many areas covered; cards, coins, sponge balls, silks, illusions. The book is physically smaller than I imagined but it is easy enough to read. There are a couple of chapters and some tricks missing in comparison to the Complete Course, but the Complete Course would not be worth the extra money. For a beginner or someone who wants to broaden their magic this is a good purchase.
Are you a beginner? New to magic?...... January 17, 2005 Assuming you are new to magic and have not yet been exposed to any of the "well known secrets" this book will provide everything you need to be up and running doing compelling tricks at a level sufficiently cunning level to highly impress/amuse your friends & family. Personally I am only interested in card magic as coins, metal rings etc are just too corny for pulling tricks in pubs/round at friends houses and don't suit "off the cuff" presentation. BUT - if you want to learn about coin sleight & other types of magic it is all here - right up to an ambitious full dissapearance of an assistant (might take some practice!). If you go to a pro magic shop I would be surprised if they would recommend this book, BUT you may instead end up with something much more complex and less user friendly. This book will provide a baffling array of effects and allow you to go on to other texts & props/special decks if you find your enthusiasm grow. Really very good & very simply laid out. One word of caution - just 'cause the book shows the "magician" wearing a naff tux and suggests cheesy patter - you don't have to follow its advice - create your own "vibe" around the effects and stay natural for more devastating impacts! Enjoy!
Good beginners magic book February 17, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book is basicaly a scaled down version of Mark Wilsons complete course in magic, which makes it a very good book for people who would like to start learning magic. In comparison to the complete course it is a physically much smaller book, but contains all the the tricks from the larger book. The comlete course has more ilustrations, but the ones given here are perfectly adequate. There are many types of trick covered in the book, with a good selection of each type and skill level, making it a good choice for those who don't yet know which type of magic they prefer. All the tricks are well presented and few require expensive equipment - if you have a decent pack of cards, a few coins, a hankerchief and a piece of string you will be able to get started. The only problem I have with this book is that I already own the complete course, so there was no point buying the cyclopedia. However, if you are interested in magic and don't have the complete course then I would recomend either book without hesitation.
An essential item on the Magician's bookshelf September 5, 2002 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am a Gospel Magician, and my wife bought me this book about 5 years ago. It is invaluable is providing inspiration for all kinds of magic from close-up to stage. The diagrams of the moves are easy to follow and enable you to quickly understand the principles of the illusions. No need to buy loads of props to do many of Mark's tricks, just get a pack of cards and a length of string and Hey Presto ! You can be a magician, doing tricks which none of the othe books show.
