5 out of 5 stars Do you want to learn from Foucault's own writings?   October 29, 2003

This collection of excerpts from the key texts of Foucault - both his greater works as well as interviews and articles not easily available even at the local university library - provides an excellent overview of one of the greatest social thinkers of the 20th century.

It comes with an introduction from Nikolas Rose and Paul Rabinow - the former has developed Foucaults notion of governmentality in various books.

The excerpts cover his writings from the early 50s to his death in 1984. Therefore the around 30 pieces are rather short: 10-20 pages - perhaps compromising the understanding of the specific work. But taken together they constitute a unique opportunity in one place to read Foucaults various writings in connection and get an understanding of the whole body of his work and his development of thought.

For a student as I it's a good collection of texts as it provides also the not often read writings in university courses on Foucault and his thinking.

And then it's cheap compared to other books used in the context of the university.
