1 out of 5 stars The Miracle of Istanbul: Liverpool FC, from Paisley to Benitez   June 12, 2007

This book started out well as it was giving a fans perspective of the 2005 champions league final. However it lacked detail of the range of emotions that Liverpool fans felt during the final that night.
The book then goes on to review the season on a competition by competition basis. This review is little more than a rehashing of previous match reports and offers little additional insight into the season.
The second last chapter of the book is about musicians and bands from Liverpool and the Liverpool music scene. There is a detailed discussion about different bands and nightclubs in Liverpool. I found this bizarre as I had bought a book titled The Miracle of Istanbul. This therefore appears as an attempted to `fill' the book.
Overall this is a most disappointing book which is at its best at start and continually goes downhill from then on.

Thoroughly enjoyed this title.
It was wonderful reliving the glorious night (I have the match on DVD) in print. Well-written and a excellent tribute to Liverpool's worthy European Champions League success.

5 out of 5 stars Should read it...........and then again.   February 6, 2006

Reccomended for liverpool fans, re-living instanbul and emotions felt by the author. He has goood opinions on previous managers and the players they bought rightly or wrongly. Fair comments on Benitez and his decisions throughout the season as he did some disjointed ones in earlier important games. We got some luck when it was needed....Five stars and for the book also...

5 out of 5 stars Must read for Liverpool fans!   October 1, 2005

I loved this book. The first and last chapter took me right back to that glorious night in Istanbul.

I think if you went to Liverpool's matches in Europe last season you'll really enjoy it, as its obviously written by real fans who were there. And if you didn't, this is the best way to find out what it was really like. There's also some good background stuff about Liverpool in Europe, and if you're into the local music there's a bit about The Farm and the Bunnymen too. Overall I'd say it's well researched, and well written and I'd recommend it for any Liverpool fan.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written and badly researched   September 23, 2005

I bought this book expecting to read an inside account of Liverpool's resurgence under Rafa Benitez. It disappoints in every way. The story of Rafa's first year at Liverpool and the Istanbul final is badly written and looks like it has been culled from news reports that appeared through the year on skysports, soccernet and other websites. The book is badly researched and presents incorrect information on Spanish football. (For example - Valencia's team being called 'Los Ches' has nothing to do with Argentinian players in the squad and Che Guevara, as the authors suggest. It just means 'mates' in the local Valenciano dialect.)
Finally, there really isn't much about how Liverpool was built into English football's dominant force by Shankly, Paisley and Fagan. On the whole, I'd recommend not buying this book. There are much better accounts of Liverpool's champions league winning season out there.
