 An essential book - a great all-rounder April 11, 2007

I recently bought a Nikon D40 after outgrowing a point and shoot and bought this book to try to flatten the learning curve. I found the book really helpful and learnt so many things that make me want to get out and take better shots and this book allows you to do that. In particular, it is great to have the benefit of a professional's experience when it comes to the workflow process and there are many sound ideas and practices in this book regarding taking the shots and ensuring that your workflow is solid and dependable. I also now fully understand the RAW v JPG debate and thanks to the book know when to use each, their respective merits and how to get the best out of RAW images. Incidentally, I have also got so much more out of my copy of Photoshop since reading this book. A great buy.

I hoped that this book would be a handbook for using a digital SLR. It is not it does not tell you anything that you did not know when you bought your camera.
I was disapointed as I expected it to be good especially witht he author being such a good practical photographer.
Save your money and buy a magazine it will have more info in it.
Excellent Introduction to DSLR Ownership August 8, 2006

This book was recommended to me by Chris Townsend and am I glad I bought my own copy! It is great value and a must for anyone venturing into DSLR ownership, especially for the first time, I read it once then again a month later and learn't each time something new!
It is well laid out with only the necessary info that you need, it doesn't go into to much unwanted detail of Exposure and Depth of Field, Apertures etc that you probably have repeated in lots of other books! It sticks to Digital cameras and they operate, how to set them up and how to deal with the images after! Histograms are well explained, with pictures and examples, great stuff!
The pictures are of course Amazing! The book is quite small in size so easily packable and has 144 pages, I guess we might want more, but that is being greedy and would no doubt put the price up!!
It is easy reading for anyone to understand the print is black over a white background, great!
Worth EVERY penny!

This should be compulsory reading for anyone making the transition from a point-and-shoot camera to a digital SLR. It is written in a no-nonsense style, and will shorten the learning curve - whatever make of camera you own - dramatically. Not suitable for the experienced photographer, but otherwise interesting enough to be read through at one sitting. Full of information to make the SLR experience a more pleasurable one.

If,like me,you have just jumped the fence into the digital world and purchased a DSLR you will, in all probability, do as I did and purchase books on the subject. Most of these will be aimed at those with some previous experience and written in a language which has the ability to induce coma or at best reduce you to the fetal position whilst whinning slowly.Well worry no longer. What a breath of fresh air this book is. Written in a no nonsense and techno babble free style it is packed with sound advice from one of the top pro photographers.I found myself saying "Ahh that's what it means" on a number of occasions.If you want to become a tech head then this is not the book for you. If you want a book which says "try this and this is how to do it" then buy this and keep it in your camara bag.
