There has been only one book on photography ever writen December 19, 1999 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Many people talk about this book but few have ever read it and even less have put what they learned into practice. Some people think that this book isn't relative to modern photography but they could not be further from the truth. The methodology laid out in these pages from meatering, exposure to consideration of the final print are fundamental to image creation. I use these techniques successfully with my half plate cammera, my 35 Nikon, and even when scanning into Adobe Photophop. This book should be read with the others from this trilogy, The Cammera and The Print, in order to gain the most for Ansel Adams techings. I particular, after reading this book start immediatly on the phrint wich, alothough no slightly out dated, in an invaluable referance gide to any photographer. I do not keep this book in a bookshelf. My copy is in my darkroom or cammera bag and so should yours.
Excellent book, for the scientifically minded November 29, 1999 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Ansel does an excellent, very thorough job of defining the job of getting your visualised image to come out on the negative and print. The book doesn't get five stars from me though, for two reasons. Firstly, the style is very dry, and the explanations aimed strictly at the scientifically minded. He is a university lecturer, not a teacher. If you're looking for an explanation of the zone system, there are better summaries of it written by others. A quick search around the net will yield some.Secondly, there are too many specific references and dependencies on photographic equipment, which quite frankly are out of date, or getting there very quickly. In terms of learning technique, much of what he says doesn't apply directly any more. The principles are still the same, however, and it's still an excellent book to have; to learn and as a reference.
