5 out of 5 stars Everyone of them gives a giggle   January 29, 2004

Gerry Durrell has a talent for writing in that grey area between serious and hilarious, a job that very few do well... and he does it as well as it can be done. This is book full of charming stories, that anyone, of any age, will love. I notice so few of his books are still in print, something that is a terrible shame. I grew up wanting to be him, and this is a book that for adults gives a wonderful insight, and for kiddies will just make you laugh yourself to sleep.

3 out of 5 stars A fish supper to delight and entertain you   March 4, 2003

An evening on a Greek beach with a friend and a large bottle of retsina, and 'Fillets of Plaice' was born. It was to have been entitled 'Spirit of Place' but the friend's sense of humour was well lubricated and 'Fillets of Plaice' it became. Mr Durrell's reminiscences of his youth in Corfu and London, his wacky family and love of all animals never fail to enchant in this delightful series of humorous anecdotes.
