Very good job May 5, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've just finished this book and I can say only one think. The autor knows much about it and writes it as deeply as possible. Why do I leave just 4*?? Because sometimes the autor was writing about something, but not strictly to the topic. There was written down over one and half page in couple of capitols, but for no use. The autor could save my time by cutting it off and save the paper too :)).

An inspiring and instructive read February 20, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book is simply wonderful. Although it covers many topics that are common to so many other photography titles, Alan Briot's book does it with such an engaging style and such deep insight that it surpasses pretty much everything else on the market. His photographs, which are displayed throughout the book, are quite sensational. But it's the carefully crafted text - in concert with his images - where the real value of this book derives from. The scope of his writing, which covers such topics as composition, developing a personal style, selecting your best work, creating a portfolio, and being an artist in business, is truly ambition. The best part is that he pulls it off - and very successfully at that. Bravo Briot.
Dedication to detail! April 8, 2007 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
Alain is dedicated to arts and precision. His didactical approach on the matter of landscape photography is astonishingly finely tuned towards an audience that spans from beginner to established master. His education and most of all his personality makes this book a very pleasant read.
I can not even begin to tell you how much useful information he shares in this astonishing book. It starts with the very basics, but even there he explains his view in ways that probably will show new aspects on these basics to the reader.
I meant to let you know about the structure of Alain's book, it really covers a lot of ground from the photographic process as a whole, to the technical and the artistic aspects, to creating a portfolio, establishing a personal style, being an artist, running a business and learning how you can do this too through specific "Skill Enhancement Exercises. "
These exercises are offered at the end of each chapter and allow you to study and work on each part of the process on your own and at your own pace.
Chapter 1: How to see Photographically Chapter 2: How to compose a photograph Chapter 3: How to choose the best lens for a specific composition Chapter 4: How to find the best light for a specific photograph Chapter 5: How to select the best "film" for a specific image Chapter 6: How to determine the best exposure for a specific photograph Chapter 7: Keepers or not Keepers? Chapter 8: How to create a portfolio of your work Chapter 9: How to establish a personal photographic style Chapter 10: Being an Artist Chapter 11: Being an Artist in Business Part one Chapter 12: Being an Artist in Business Part two Chapter 13: How you can do it too Chapter 14: Conclusion
Whether you are devoted to the subject, or just interested in more detailed views of an artist in business, this book is unique in it's approach and a great pleasure to read.
I have a coffee spot on one page, literally spitting out my coffe because I was laughing so hard while reading his story about....
Well, I do not want to spoil it for you. :o)
Alain's book is one of a kind, a true gem and I am reading it the second time now.
One of the most helpful books on landscape photography April 3, 2007 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I have read many books on Landscape Photography. This one is very different. Although Alain briefly covers the basic technical stuff, the real gems are the sections on the more complicated artistic elements, an area where many other writers fear to tread. His sections on seeing photographically, composition, lighting, portfolios and personal style were illuminating. I found the sections on being an artist in business a little out of place and would have preferred to see more of the artistic aspects, leaving the "business" sections to another publication (although Alain has more detailed writings in both areas). Others would disagree! However, if you have any remaining doubts about buying this book look at Alain's website: www.beautiful-landscape.com and you will want to read what this artist has to say in his book! One of the best books in the genre.
Spectacular book on landscape photography January 12, 2007 8 out of 14 found this review helpful
Spectacular Book
Despite having to wait almost 4 weeks for this book I am extremely glad I ordered it. It contains excellent images printed at high quality. Its the first book that I purposefully stand under good quality lighting to get the benefit of the images. The text is well written with useful information without being full of jargon. Useful hints and tips of many years photography are included in a style that is a pleasure to read.
Excellent.
