Worzel Gummidge ageless and priceless simply buy it !!!!! September 20, 2008 Now first a brief outline of the story..... First there was a little Scarecrow called Worzel Gummidge (played by the late and great Jon Pertwee) who's job as it happens is to be a scarecrow in Ten Acre Field but he on the other hand has other ideas. He takes every opportunity to leave the crows to have the field and he gets up to many adventures with the help of his two titchy human friends (Sue is played by the late Charlotte Coleman and John played by Jeremy Austin). Worzel was made by his father figure "The Crowman" (played by Geoffrey Bayldon of Catweazle fame) who makes all of the Scarecrows in the land and with a little country magic names them and they come to life. All the scarecrows are very respectfull of the Crowman for giving them life and never lets him down (all except Worzel that is).
Worzels adventures are peppered by great characters such as the love of his life Aunt Sally or to give her full name "Aunt Roll Up Roll Up Three Balls A Penny Sally" who whilst being Worzels true love is also cruel and spiteful to him at every oportunity, but they do say love is blind and that is surely the case with Worzel. The characters in the adventures are played by now famous actors and actresses such as Aunt Sally (Una Stubbs), Saucy Nancy (Barbara Windsor), Sue and John's Dad (Mike Berry) Sergent Beetroot (Bill Maynard), Dolly Clothespeg (Lorraine Chase) and the lovely Meg Jones as Mrs Braithwaite the farmers wife and even some small roll's for the likes of Bill Pertwee, Joan Simms, Mike Read and Billy Connolly. So a Star Studded cast in a very enjoyable story and littered with a moral undertone to a majority of the shows.
Now who would enjoy the show ? Everybody, but if your a 40' something, you will be nostalgic for your youth and if you have kids or grand kids they will love his adventures and with the news saying that Worzel is to return they will have a head start on their friends by having heard about him and his friends. Also please be aware the new show cannot ever be as good as the legendary Jon Pertwee's version as he was Worzel Gummidge. A bit like James Bond will allways be Sean Connory and worzel will always be Jon Pertwee.
There are four series available and even a set of two series called "Worzel Down Under" based on Worzels adventure in New Zealand but to be honest it was never as good as the British version but still worth a look.
So all in all a great piece of British Childrens TV at its best and I hope that it will bring you as much pleasure as it has brought me and my twin daughters.
And if you look closely you may even learn to speak the language of the Scarecrow "Worzelese".....
Blissful nostalgia September 20, 2008 Worzel Gummidge is a fantastic series and apart from the slightly dated film quality, this late 70's series stands the test of time. This was clearly popular in the period of it's making as so many big stars of the day were cast in the show. Jon Pertwee is magical as the batty, grumpy and vain scarecrow who causes havoc around the village and is often bailed out of trouble by youngsters John and Sue, the only humans who know that he was made to scare off birds in Ten Acre Field. As I type this, the show is close to 30 years old and one can see how much things have changed. A running joke is the children's father sneaking off in the evenings and trying to hide the fact from his cynical kids that he isn't going to the pub. I found myself wondering if such quirky scenes would be deemed appropriate for a children's series nowadays. If you have children, nephews, nieces or grandchildren, please buy this dvd and bring this awful, selfish and delightful scarecrow to a new audience.
Still wonderfully perenial. September 16, 2008 Our daughter, who is now 31, loved Worzel Gummidge immensely in the 80's, so I bought this not only as a happy reminder, but also for her own kids, and our grandkids, to enjoy today. And after enjoying an episode and a half, (just to check the DVD was OK, you understand), I must say the characters have become immortal, the actor's played their roles so well it is no wonder Worzel was such a huge hit and enjoyed so many series'. Indeed, there was a Worzel 'bendy' figure, (which Motorhead's guitarist, also a Wurzel, had fixed to his amps whilst with the band), and even Worzel Annual's, which would always be on the daughter's Xmas list. Geoffrey Baildon as The Crowman, Una Stubbs as Aunt Sally and every other performer were chosen extremely well, and I feel sure when reports are returned the grandchildren will have fallen in love with them all over again. Wonderfully nostalgic as these episodes still are, I can't help but agree with my fellow reviewer's comments about the transfer quality. The colour has suffered somewhat as the copying may have been carried out on a low budget, (or whatever?), but it definitely needs attending to; perhaps this will take place if the DVD's are released at a later date on Blue-Ray?
As an interesting (?) aside, Worzel visited our town of Poole, here in Dorset at the height of the '80's Worzel-mania, to appear on the then flattened old gasworks site in the town, upon which Sainsbury's now stands. Daughter, Natalie, was beside herself with glee at seeing Worzel arrive in a model T Ford car, and get himself on board a real live elephant!! The day was crowned when Worzel walked around the small arena to shake hands with as many kids as possible, (there were hundreds!), and I captured him shaking her hand, and the best parts of the remainder of his PA, on an 8mm silent movie - I wonder if it's still tucked away somewhere?
Worzel Gummidge March 22, 2008 Worzel Gummidge is a funny series, about a scarecrow, who makes friends with two children and the crowman who makes the scarecrows. The series is quite good, although the colour is washed out because it looks as though it was shot on film. Una Stubbs is great as Aunt Sally although she treats poor Worzel appallingly.

it has lost a lot of its colour so the result is not so nice as expected but none the less it was still a reminder of how good british shows for children are
