If you are a lover of fine artwork or just a fan of the lord of the rings movie the this is an essential purchase.
One of the reasons the movie was such a big hit is the graphics and scenery in it. This book gives every detail about the graphics- all the landscapes- from rivendale to the shire, all the props- from gandalfs pipes to Aragorns sword and Gimli's armour, all of the Mordor and Isangaard army- from Orcs to the Cave troll and finally all of the outfits- from Arwen's dress to Saruman's cloak.
Not only are they all in the book, but it tells you everything you need to know, it gives you concept sketches, detailed sketches, models and even photos from the movies. A very nice touch is the comments from the art designers about progress and the final outcome.
Futhermore, it is all presented fantastically, so it is easy to flick through and easy to read.
Overall this book is very interesting at least and sensational at best. A brilliant book which anyone who remotely likes lord of the rings or artwork deserves to buy this book

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring   June 18, 2002

This book covers the artwork for creating most enviroments, like Rivendell, Moria, and all that. The next part covers the monsters, and the different ideas that they had about creating Orchs, the Cavetroll, and all the fantasy beasts we encounter in the film and in the book. The next two parts contains the creation of the armor and weapons for the caracters, and finally the different characters and their clothing.

The artwork in this book is really good and inspiring, it really shows how good artist they worked with. In every chapter they show first the sketches, and then how it developed to the screen, most enviroments were a mix of computergenerated backgrounds, real film and people wearing masks, like the orchs.
They really show how much work it was to make a good movie out of a good book that millions of people have read and have millions of different ideas of the fantasyworld of Middle earth.

I bought this book even though I had said to myself: okay, I will see the movie, of course, and I actually liked it, but I will not buy any of these tons of merchandise cr** that will circulate on the market. Like Saruman the toybear, or the mug with Aragorn on the side.

But I bought this book, and I think you should do that if you have any interest in art, or just like pretty books. I belong to both of these groups.
