 Missing a real plot September 22, 2008

The main character goofs around a bit and gets laid before stumbling on the conspiracy. It was enjoyable enough, but mostly uneventful.
 Enjoyable Thriller September 18, 2008
A ghostwriter, and narrator of this novel, is called on to write the memoirs of recent retired British Prime Minister, Adam Lang. However, he soon finds that the previous ghostwriter who was in the process of writing Lang's memoirs, died in mysterious circumstances. To make matters even more complicated, while the ghostwriter is visiting the Langs in Martha's Vineyard, New England, to discuss the book, he (Lang) is accused of war crimes, by the International Court of Justice.
I found this novel an enjoyable read. It is pretty obvious from the start, who Adam Lang, and his wife, Ruth are based on. This made the storyline that much more interesting, and there are few moments that nearly had me laughing out loud.
There is, also, a good plot to go along with the humourous bits, as the ghostwriter digs deeper into both Lang's background, and the previous ghostwriter's strange death. I found this book both thought provoking and a page turner.

you'll have the gist of the story from the other reviews so I won't bother too much with that and give you a brief asessment of the book as a novel . Its not the most exciting read you'll ever have although it is quite atmospheric in a sort of Shipping News type of way ( althoughy just as plodding ! ) . Its quite evocative of Marthas Vineyard in winter and how rough the weather can be with its portrayal of windswept and rainy beaches and hamlets .
I though the Adam Lang character portrayal of a former British Prime Minister was quite weak and unconvincing . The character didn't quite seem to fit the role , particularly when using the word " man " at the end of a sentence !
Not a particularly gripping novel by any means but was quite easy on the eye and the plot wasn't taxing either . Which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your individual point of view . I thought the ending wasn't particularly climatic either and one was left wondering " was that it ?? " when the last page was reached .
Not a page turning blockbuster by any means but one to peacefully pass the time . And then throw away .

I am not entirely impressed with the novel " Ghost" by Robert Harris. It becomes clear in the review.
The concepts and ideas introduced are fascinating to learn about. Ghost writing is a concept which I am not familar with and it is interesting to learn in greater detail about the concept. This adds originality to the plot in terms of a political thriller. Ghost's plot revolves around a mysterious writer producing a memoir about a former prime minister who is centre of a huge conspiracy. He is a controversial figure who recieves widespread media attention for the wrong reasons, which fails to achieve any credibility as a politican. The setting is based in a typical publishing company of London and shifts to the concealed location of America, not far from Boston. The initial chapters nicely unfolds the plot to the reader and maintain some degree of interest.
As a reader, I felt dissapointed with concluding parts of the novel.The author ran out of ideas as the ending approached. It felt too rushed and lost its ryhtmn. The story could have been further developed to provide a thrilling climax for readers.
Overall, Robert Harris plot to the Ghost is original and interesting in terms of a thriller. I felt let down by the ending and this really spoilt what promised to be a perfect novel.

Aside from the fact that "the worlds biggest conspiracy" is apparently something which features in the news everyday (I won't spoil it for you, but it has something to do with this so-called "war" on "terror") and is certainly less remarkable than those of other trashy thrillers (because, lets face it, this is exactly what we're discussing here), the books was immensly slow to start. In fact, you don't really get told much until 3/4 of the way through, and there is very little activity to compensate. Its not totally awful in terms of the writing, and it was certainly readable, but why would you want to waste your time? Robert Harris' "Fatherland" was far more engaging and more pleasing. This is a bit of a flop quite frankly. For die-hard fans (if any exist) of Mr Harris only.
