1 out of 5 stars Awful   August 17, 2008

I've never given a bad review, however out of all the books my 3 year old has this has got to be the worst....yes the pictures are good - but the use of the word 'bad baby' doesnt sit with me well....Why are we saying the baby was 'bad'? Because he didnt say thank you or pay? I really think there are lots of books out there for children which make better use of the English language than this one...bad baby - it's awful!

5 out of 5 stars English for Austrians   August 1, 2008
I've just read this to two twelve-year-old Austrian girls and they loved it and wanted me to read it again. It's an excellent story because it appeals to the older mind as well as to the small child, and also because the English is simple and so repetitive the foreign language learner can hear, understand, learn and enjoy. Of course, it also emphasises the cultural lesson of English people having to say please all the time.

4 out of 5 stars Charming, but not for all children   June 28, 2008
I think this is a lovely book, the illustrations are beautiful and witty, and I've read it to my daughter since she was about 6 months old, but it's never really taken hold of her. She's never asked me to read it (she's 18 months old now, and demands a lot of books - not this one), and she will only sit through all of it at bed time. The only bit she really likes is where the bad baby falls off and loses his stash. The four stars is from the five I would give it, minus one because my daughter doesn't like it, and I guess her opinion counts. What I'm saying is, it's not a sure thing, despite the good reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Good even for very little ones   June 18, 2008
I loved this book as a child, and bought it when my baby was six months old, assuming that I'd have to wait a while before she started liking it, but she loves it already, especially when I bounce her along to the words "rumpeta, rumpeta, rumpeta" which appear on almost every page.

5 out of 5 stars "And they went rumpeta rumpeta rumpeta all down the road with (various people) all running after"   April 29, 2008
This book is driving me absolutely insane! I have to read it every night and to continually have to read out the long list of people who end up chasing the elephant is maddening! But ... my three year old son is potty about the book, and that's why I have given it five stars, because that's what matters. The pictures are clear and interesting with lots to talk about and the story is catchy. Personally I think the end is a bit perculiar. I can't understand why all the people who were chasing the elephant all suddenly stop to eat pancakes with the bad baby, but then start chasing the elephant again. And if I can't understand it, I can't see how a child can understand it.

The book also aims to teach the word "please" but as yet my son totally refuses to utter that word. Perhaps I have to put myself through the torture of reading this book for a while longer yet before he will do so.

So, to sum up, its a fun, well illustrated, catchy book which my son loves, but that I can't quite get my head around!
