Very Disappointed February 12, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I had this book when I was little and I loved it. Seeing it for sale over 25 years later brought back happy memories. I ordered 2 copies at Christmas for my nieces. On delivery I was very disappointed. The book was a lot thinner than the original and with a lot more American words in it. I don't remember the original having a lot of American spelling in it. It could be very confusing for children trying to learn English words and spellings for things.
I was so disappointed I sent them both back! You can pick up better word books on the High Street.
Somethings from childhood are better left there!
I was a little disappointed... July 16, 1998 52 out of 52 found this review helpful
I had the book when I was little (we called it Big Book). When I bought it for my son recently, I had the feeling that I remembered pages that weren't there: birds, flowers, buildings. I hunted up my old copy and sure enough, there were quite a few pages missing in the newer book. But nowhere in Joey's book does it say it's a revised edition! What's in the book is great, but I can't get rid of the feeling that we got gypped!Another problem with the book is that it's not bound very well. All our Richard Scarry books seem to fall apart at the spine in very short order. It's true we read them constantly, but we read other books as often, and they don't fall apart as quickly.
A favorite children's classic April 23, 1998 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
This and other Richard Scarry books were my favorites as children, and my children will read them someday, too. I especially love Lowly Worm.
This book was a true marvel for my kids April 21, 1998 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
My kids and I really enjoyed reading this book together. My oldest daughter, Dee, received this book as a gift at age 2, back in 1987. The colorful pictures kept her attention and having the names of the pictures was a great asset for association. My son, Willy, was born in 1988 and Dee would get her Richard Scarry book out and read to him. The bright pictures also kept Willy attention. As Willy got older, the two of them would play the FIND game using Mr. Scarry's book. Dee would ask Willy to find a bus, pencil, etc. They would also use this book to learn to spell the names of the pictures. Mr Scarry's book became one of our best learning tools. Eileen, my youngest, also enjoyed this book in her early years and still to this day takes the book on road trips with her to play the find game with the older siblings. Our book is well used and has been scotch taped several times, but the kids enjoy this book and have for the past 11 yrs. I truly recommend this book for any family.
My son and I found the book fun and educational April 21, 1998 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
My son and I love the characters of Richard Scarry We found the variety of nursery rhymes, storys, and letter associations great. Plus, if your child loves animals this is the book to read with them.
