3 out of 5 stars Elephant Adventure Revisited   November 10, 2006
I loved these books as a child, and have started reading this one to my 10 year old daughter. It's still exciting and beautiful stuff, but I am made uncomfortable now by the thoughtlessly dismissive references to 'blacks' and by the whole animal hunting thing. The mother elephant is wounded to save Hal's life, and has to be killed. This is done with a certain sense of responsibility and regret, but if they weren't there hunting the poor thing, it wouldn't have happened.

I discuss this with my daughter, and censor slightly as I read - substituting 'little man' for 'little black', for instance, when describing a pygmy. I'm not exactly saying HWP was a racist - sometimes he writes of Africans with respect and admiration, but there is that background stereotyping that probably no one even noticed when it was written...

4 out of 5 stars another fantastic book   April 16, 2003

Willard Price is undoubtably my favourite author. His books are exciting, facinating and full of animal facts. This is no exception. Admittedly, it is rather strange how the Hunt boys seem to survive everything, but Price shows that this is due to their immense skills. This is definitely one for animal lovers only - people reading it purly for the adventure will find that only half the book appeals.

I think the book is really good. It is exciting and because I wanted to know what was going to happen next I couldn't stop reading it. This book deserves to be read by everyone!

This book is a great book for educational and entertainment purposes. I would also recommend the rest of the Adventure Book Series which is also great for people of all ages anxious to learn new things they wouldn't in a classroom.
