I loved this series of adventure gamebooks as a youngster and this, the sixth in the series of a supposed seven, promised to be just as entertaining as the other five. The plot takes you as Avenger the ninja and ruler of Irsmuncast into the notorious Rift, a kind of hell underground where many of the armies of evil herald from and where numerous deadly enemies of the title character reside. Most promising in this book for me was the return of several characters from Book 2 Assassin who escaped Avenger's wrath in that book. A showdown of epic proprtions beckoned.
However the book and it's entire plot and objective (of Avenger going into The Rift to rescue his long time friend and ally kidnapped and taken into the Rift) is thwarted by a hurried and pointless ending in which Avenger is left to an assumed death in the bowells of The Rift after falling/jumping into a giant worm's maw? There is no ending as such and the only explanation I have ever been able to offer in the absence of the promised Book 7 was that the publishers decided to pull the book deal from the authors forcing them to construct a hasty end in this book, a task which they unfortunately fail miserably.
I have attempted over the years following Inferno's release to establish the reason for the lack of a Book 7 and the lacklustre finale in Book 6 without success.
If you have and enjoyed the other books from the series then buy this one to complete it and at least appreciate some more of the same in terms of the authors' brilliant narration of their world and it's characters and creatures but don't raise your hopes of a logical and satisfying conclusion to this series of gamebooks.
