4 out of 5 stars Secret Society's in wonderful new worlds   March 21, 2007

The Night World isn't a place. It's all around us. It's a secret society of vampires, werewolves, witches, and other creatures of darkness that live amongst us. They are beautiful. They are deadly and are irresistible to humans. Your high school teacher could be one, and so could your boyfriend...

The Night World laws say it's okay to hunt humans; it's okay to kill them. There are only two things you can't do with them:

1) Never let them find out the Night World exists.
2) Never fall in love with one of them.

Love has never been so scary...
The Night World is all around us. A secret society of vampires, werewolves, witches and creatures of 'darkness'. They are beautiful - and deadly - and it's so easy to fall in love...

Enchantress (a.k.a Spellbinder) is the third novel in the Night World series.

"Blaise's black magic is powerful. The only way Thea can fight back is to use her own white magic, to bewitch Eric herself as a bluff. But soon Thea finds herself getting too close to Eric, feeling forbidden emotions, breaking Night World laws by falling in love. As Halloween and the Night of the Witch draw closer, can Thea save Eric and herself from Blaise's revenge?"

This book has darker aspects. It has underlying themes, such as the influence of peer pressure, one's morals and being strong within yourself to stand up for what is right and wrong. There is wonderful information and description of various crystals, stones, herbs and landscapes, that help with the spectacular imagery. L.J Smith has created the characters beautifully, where-by you 'see' through Thea's eyes, with the love of a 'sister'. By the end of the novel, I found myself forgiving Blaise of everything. 'Would you give up everything?', Thea and Eric's situation take the soulmate principle to a whole new level and their love is crystallised when Thea breaks the rules of the Night World and tells him everything. After battling a wraith together, there is a powerful and emotional 'scene' when they face the inner circle and drink from the Cup of Lethe. You are left with a yearning hope that Thea will be openly reunited with her family once again.

3 out of 5 stars Clunky but Enjoyable   June 28, 2006

Book three of the Night World explores the witches heirarchy and introduces two cousins Thea and Blaise Harman, both from the illustrious Hearthwoman witch line that can be traced back to the first witch society. Blaise and Thea are great characters and Blaise is very reminiscent of Faye the bad witch of the Secret Circle trilogy. She vies for human boys' attention and plays with them until she gets bored or she and Thea are expelled from school and shipped off to new relatives.

The witchy section of the Night World is set up beautifully and the female protagonists are strong but this falls down with the introduction of Thea's soulmate Eric who is very bland and All American boy, Smith is at her best writing teen bad boys. When Blaise makes a play for Eric, Thea has to stop her but unwittingly unleashes a dark spirit when a spell goes wrong, leaving humans at risk, so with the help of Eric she tries to put things right. Thea must decide whether to turn her back on her heritage for the chance at love.

This installment is a bit of a clunker, although it passes the time nicely and sets up the Night World notion of a third circle, Circle Twilight for both humans and the supernatural races. However, this has plot holes fit to drive a truck through; why would any family banish a teenage girl to fend for herself? Who honestly believes that Eric's mom is going to be turning cartwheels at taking in a strange girl? I suppose I should be more willing to suspend my disbelief on these points if I'm willing to acknowledge the supernatural elements. With a more charming male lead this would probably be a four star as the plotting and pace is sound, but a ho-hum lack of chemistry leaves this simmering on three.

5 out of 5 stars A girls' sacrifice for her SOULMATE   February 12, 2001

A very detailed and considerate installment into the series, Lisa has continued the spellbinding storyline(Nightworld)and has still managed to give Enchantress the strength of an individual and independent story. Thea, Blaise and Eric are detailed and emotive characters, that portray nearly every aspect of human nature, the good and the bad. I would recommend Nightworld books (2, 6, 7, 8)since they are so addictive and hard to put down! I also would like to voice my query about the whereabouts of Strange Fate as i would like to know if I will ever get the chance to finish the series!! It seems to have vanished off the face of the earth. If anybody has read please let me KNOW!!!
