Ok, heres the background, I had a job interview for that job I really wanted, working on the substance misuse team of a local authority, this book helped me get that job, what more can I say?

The book is very easy to read, set out in a really logical manner.
You would think so much information in one book would be daunting, but that is not the case, if you work in this field, or intend to I highly recommend this book its worth every penny.
It covers all aspects and is set out in 5 parts;

THE FIRST covers the basics,drug effects,why do some people misuse substances etc.
THE SECOND covers the care and treatment of substance misusers, such as interventions, harm minimisation and relapse prevention.
THE THIRD covers organisational and policy issues, such as coercion and the criminal justice system, health promotin and organisation of services.
THE FOURTH covers some specific populations, such as women and alcohol, young people and anabolic andogenic steroid misusers.
THE FIFTH covers case studies.

All in all definately worth buying.

This book is one of the easiest most relevant substance misuse book I have come across. It is comprehensive and relevant to the novice and the experience clinician a must to have on your shelf and to challenge your own practice and skills. If you only buy one book this just may be the one to get. It is fantastic to see UK research and even references to Northern Ireland. Well Done!!!

If you working in substance misuse in the UK, and especially if you are taking the RCGP certificate in substance misuse, then this book is for you. It details the whole of substance abuse and treatment as it applies to the UK. Too often, the books in this field are written in the US, and detail practice in the US, which whilst valuable is not always relevant to UK preactice. The various chapters are written by specialists in the field, such as John Strang, Michael Gossop, Duncan Raistrick. Spend nineteen quid and but this book - you won't regret it
