Joined up thinking on finance August 3, 2005 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've just finished my MSc Finance and I really liked this book. Firstly, it is very well thought out. The first half provides the background to option theory whereas the second half provides a good grounding of modern econometric modelling and its clear that Alexander knows her material inside out. Of course, there are books on both these subjects but as practitioner you need to see how they interrelate and this is the only book I have come across which really achieves that and is also readable. Alexander writes in a clear, no-nonsense style and gives you just the right amount of detail without constantly blinding you with science or just regurgitating pages and pages of algebra. Furthermore, there are good, clear examples in Excel which show you how to get your hands dirty. Great stuff.
Simply the Best July 12, 2004 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I was a bit sceptical at how good people rate this book. I was also in two minds to buy this as it's a bit pricey too. But I'm sure glad I did! I'm an experienced computer programmer in the last few months of finance course masters and developing a finance system for my dissertation. Not only does this book cover all the financial concepts it goes on to model these too. There's no 'how to use' tools; which is what I wanted. It covers the concepts quickly at the start of each chapter and then gets right into the thick of the action, which I liked. I'd only wished I'd bought this book at the start of the course as this book is self-contained and you will get all you need from it. If you're a pure financier then this is for you - it makes a great reference and for polishing up on concepts you may by rusty on. If you're an experienced computer programmer then this is for you. If you're a programmer novice and want to learn how to develop models this book is not for you...yet.
An excellent book! February 12, 2002 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
As a Professor of Finance at a University in Belgium, I can highly recommend this book. It is well written, clear and the wealth of empirical applications is one of its major assets as these directly motivate the practical use of all the models. An excellent book for practitioners, academics and advanced students!
An excellent book from an authority on financial analysis. December 26, 2001 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
'Market Models' will be welcomed both by practitioners and academics in the field in which Professor Alexander is an acknowledged expert. Its mix of theory and application, of lucidity, accessibility and depth of insight, makes the book a uniquely valuable addition to the literature on the subject of financial data analysis. It seems sure to become a standard text, and can only add to Professor Alexander's excellent reputation.
Excellent treatment of theory with application examples December 13, 2001 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
The book provides a complete and accessible treatment of models widely used in Finance. While strong on the theoretical side, the book contains numerous examples of model applications that highlight potential problems and help avoiding erroneous implementation. I strongly recommend "Market Models" to both practitioners and students of Finance.
