Man! Those BBC accents!!! June 1, 2005 4 out of 20 found this review helpful
Made at the fag end of the BBC's output whereby regional accents were treated as not suitable for broadcasting! Some of the actor's weird strangulated vowels and over the top posh grated on this listener's ears! Sometimes the woman come over as a bunch of "Debutantes" chatting to their male counterparts over a G & T. The BBC seemed to think back then that the listeners could not believe somenody from the Regions could be in charge of a space ship! Oh well, that aside, this is a not bad rollicking yarn, a few Star Wars "borrowings", such as "Tidy" the pernickity android, remind you of a certain gold plated 'droid?!Made a long time ago, as far as digital sound effects etc are concerned, this stands up well. The author has a bit of a tin ear for dialogue, and the constant grump everybody seems to have all the time jars a tad on my ear, but it is an interesting yarn done well for it's time. I suggest though that you also try "Journey Into Space", which achieved far more in regard to suspense, character, plot and action. Now THAT is a series. Earthsearches I and II are not bad, but do not really justify the stonking price tag. JIS is cheaper and you get more bang fer yer bucks!
The Search Is Over... November 26, 2004 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
A long overdue release for one of the best radio sci-fi series ever! Both series are here, and remastered too. A nice package which will keep me happy for weeks to come!
Wonderful, Long-Awaited Release November 14, 2004 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
In the early 1980s, a radio station here in Winnipeg aired the two EarthSearch series. In true Canadian fashion, they aired the second series first. I was captivated by the story, and at the time I sent a letter to the BBC asking if this series could be purchased in any form. Getting a negative response from them, is tas in the late 1990's that I tracked down the cassettes the BBC sold of the series. Unfortunately, even this was somewhat edited. So when this particular series came out, I was basically praying that it would be unedited and sound as good to me now as it did back in the early eighties. I was not at all disappointed. The addition of some commentary from James Follett is a welcome bonus, and I am very grateful for this long-awaited CD release of a wonderful BBC series.
Earthsearch - Mindwarp CD - Don't be Fooled November 7, 2003 17 out of 29 found this review helpful
I am a fan of the original BBC Earthsearch series. This CD is not it, it is a prequel to Earthsearch. It is a full cast production but not by the BBC and is marred slightly by the annoying background music. It is by James Follet and has the same style of pace and story line.My biggest problem with this however is that it is Chapter 3 in a series - a middle chapter without therefore a beginning or an end. I am currently starting a hunt for the other chapters
A good good radio play and a must have for anyone with taste March 24, 2001 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
I first heard the play on the radio some years ago and missed quite a few parts of it I admit, but the parts i did hear i found to be very well written. the acting was a bit over the top some times but as it was radion then i uppose it had to be to get the story accoss. I was delighted when i found the audio cassett version as i hadent heard the whole play b4. I enjoyed the whole play a great deal. I am looking forward to getting the next part and if it is half as good as the first I will be well pleased. As you notice I did not write a review as I don't like to spoil it for those of you that havent heard it as yet. I do recomend it for not only sci-fi fans but all lovers of good plays. You cant to better than to oder it of these guys either as ther service is fast and they will sort out any problems you may have in a very short time .
