The Smaller Majority is a book intended to inspire interest in natures less publicised species, namely invertebrates and small amphibians. This he achieves in spades and leaves one with a new-found respect and wonder of those creatures inhabiting the `world beneath out feet'.

The book is split into three habitat sections - tropical, savannah, and dessert - each featuring some of the most fascinating creatures that inhabit them. The rule of thumb is that no creatures featured are bigger than a human finger, although this is not strictly adhered to. Photography dominates, with the main bodies of text coming at the start of the habitat sections or in subchapters introducing different families of animal. However the photos are well captioned with concise yet detailed information regarding the most interesting aspects of the species.

The photography itself is by far the best I've ever seen, far outstripping more well known publications such as David Attenborough's `Life of Insects'. The hundreds of photographs of various sizes were all taken by the author and show the animal and its habitat in all its natural glory.

As Director of the Invertebrate Diversity Initiative and with more than 80 species discoveries to his name Poitr Neskrecki is an entomologist who knows his stuff. I defy anyone who does not wish to follow in his footsteps after reading this book. For many of us this may be just a pipe-dream but with `The Smaller Majority' we can at least share, understand and appreciate his work again and again. Buy this book and treasure it - a masterpiece.
