Love and Courage in the midst of Terror June 28, 2008 M M Kaye is best known for her bestseller of the 1970s, "The Far Pavilions", but this novel, first published in 1957, has been one of my favourites for many years. Set in India at the bloodthirsty time of the 1857 Mutiny, it is a wonderfully stirring tale of danger and romance. The exotically half-Spanish half-English heroine goes by the glorious sounding name of Winter de Ballesteros, Condesa de Los Aguilares. Winter is far from being a prim and proper Victorian miss, and her courage and passion are matched by that of the debonair hero, Captain Alex Randall. This novel will make you shiver with fear, as you turn the pages avidly, wondering whether the star-crossed lovers will ever be together. Keep a box of tissues handy,as you will weep throughout the reading of this epic novel; and I defy anyone to be dry-eyed at the end!
