Good core text June 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is a mathematical treatment of the subject with the minimum of plain text. It is aimed at the student who will take A2 physics and beyond. The book is clearly presented and well laid out, with good diagrams, but does not use colour printing or photographs although it does use bold print and underlining to emphasise points. The English used is very concise and clear but is not as detailed as in the books mentioned below, and is geared towards the more able student. However it does include many worked examples and exam questions for practice. The book does not cover all the additional options as, for example, Advanced Physics by Steve Adams or Understanding Physics by Jim Breithaupt, which are more closely geared to the latest course specifications.

This was my A-level text-book, (2nd Edition) I used it all the way through my university career, BSc, MSc and PhD. Now I'm teaching introductory physics at a Canadian university and I refer to this all the time in preparing my classes and setting assignments - it's much better than the text book we assigned to the students. I love it, it's straightforward, clear and easy to read, doesn't treat the reader as an idiot but neither does it try to dress things up as more complicated than they need to be for the level. I would recommend it to anyone studying physics up to and into university level.

Like another reviewer I also used this book while studying for a BSc Physics and found it extremely helpful. While many texts make huge assumptions on the readers existing knowledge or understanding, Roger Muncaster takes none of that for granted. Buy this book and you won't be disappointed.
Buy this now! August 5, 2005 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book is fantastic! I suggest buying it as early as possible, such as in the summer before you start A levels so you can use it while learning. If you do, I guarantee great results! So buy it now!
A work of art - physics is beautiful June 15, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
When I first read this book, without much previous knowledge of the subject, I was stunned by how complex and seemingly impossible the content was. But as it was explained and I set aside time to work through it I realised that this book is more than just a text book. It goes miles past the contraints of the A Level sylibus but makes the subject seem exciting and interesting. Everyting is proven, everything is explained and nothing is just assumed. Thats what makes this book so utterly brilliant, it is opeing a world of physics, its not just for passing exams. Once past the terrifying 'i have no idea whats going on' stages this book fills every reader with confidence that they are really LEARNING and not just remembering. My motto always has been - "if Roger Muncaster is for me, who can be against me?"
