Great aid July 8, 2008 You are provided with an answer which really does explain the logic behind the calculation and enables you to gain more insight and confidence at solving it. Eileen Ramsden explains things very clearly. Loved her other book contrived for A level chemistry, too.
A Really helpful book.....! June 27, 2002 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book is execelant. There are so many practice questions, so it builds up confidence. All the really hard topics, like electrode potentials are explained really well. This book has really helped me a lot. If you want to do well, as in your aiming for an 'A' grade, then this is the book you should get.
Full of examples and questions on all topics September 9, 2001 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
Calculations are not my strong point, and many other Chemistry students that I know feel the same, so I was delighted to find this book. Calculations can't be learnt just by reading, they need practice and lots of it. But all the other textbooks I used were hopeless, with confusing explanations, one or no examples, and maye one or two questions. Calculations for A-Level Chemistry is a God-send. It covers all areas of all syllabuses, from mole calculations to reaction kinetics. Don't be put off by it's dense appearance. Each type of calculation is included, with lots of examples, each with the method clearly explained, and then heaps of pracice questions, with answers in the book. Use it to build up confidence and to practice before exams. It begins with really basic maths advice and practice, so even the shakiest mathematician should be able to master nasty problems with a little work. Being able to perform calculations confidently and correctly can up your grade a great deal, and make you feel much happier when entering the exam hall, so I would say that this book is a must have for any Chemistry student nervous about the numerical side of the subject. It isn't necessarily a simple book, but if you're prepared to work through it with patience, then it will pay off.
Very good book for able chemists wanting to up their grades. November 17, 2000 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
The book dose a good job of explaining a hard subject, using worked examples followed up by questions. While it reads very much like an earlier book by A.Holderness, it is much more sutable to the modern A and AS course. It is an excellent book, however some students may find it hard to understand, especially if they are not accustomed to reading such books. I found it very helpful throughout my A-Level course, and would recommend this book to anyone who either finds the calculations in chemistry hard, or anyone wishing to furthar their skill in the subject. This book caters for both types of student.
