3 out of 5 stars Disappointed   January 14, 2008

Disappointed

As the reviewer from Qatar says, this book is an amazing piece of work. Having worked myself as an editor for just this kind of book I'm intimately aware of how much work goes into one. And this is why I've given it the three stars.

I haven't given it the full five stars for several reasons. First, I was disappointed with the layout and pictures. Being a National Geographic book I was expecting at least some of the pictures to be from the same stable as other NG books - stunning, exciting, intriguing and BIG. But what we have are (admittedly huge numbers of) pictures from a no-name archive in Germany, and many of them too small to see what's going on. Couldn't National Geographic have loaned a few images? Not even for the endpapers?

Second, being based in Italy, I started reading the section on the rise of Fascism in the early 20th century. I was surprised to find that the book has Mussolini and his mistress executed by hanging. They were, I believe shot, and only later were their corpses displayed hung upside down. This error could very easily have crept in during translation (from the original German) - the difference between hanged and hung is extremely small to a non-native speaker of English, but is vital in this context. I know that one word shouldn't condemn a book, but it starts me wondering what other errors have crept in - and can I trust this book at all?

Third, the world political scene being what it is today, I was interested to make myself better acquainted with the politics of the Muslim world. I was surprised to see that the only mention I could find of Muslim women in general came in three captions, all of them talking about Muslim women and the veil. Surely there is more to be said about the position of women in Islam as it has changed over the centuries, particularly the 20th century?

And finally, the book arrived from Amazon damaged. The cover was torn and the corners were bruised. This happens far too often with books arriving from Amazon, and although they graciously gave me a discount, the cost of the unnecessarily long phone call to the UK to arrange it cost more than the discount was worth.

Don't get me wrong. I like having this book around despite the fact that it is damaged. And the price is a giveaway (even without the discount). But I would like it better if it had some knock-you-dead photos, as seemingly promised by the National Geographic branding and I would like it better if I could feel I could trust the facts it gives.

5 out of 5 stars A great book about the world, in pages   October 28, 2006

A great book about everything happened in the history, in pages. Each page is very intensive and very comprehensive in details, pictures and photos.

It is a history refrence for anybody who wants to know more about the life.

Incredible efforts to do such a book.
