Good, but not what I needed February 6, 2005 24 out of 24 found this review helpful
The book covers a lot of aspects of photographic composition (colours, lines, focus, framing, etc.) and has a lot of pictures to illustrate the various topics. So if you want an illustrated catalogue of compositional effects this book is indeed a good choise. However, to me it has the same weakness as other similar books: It doesn't really help me when I'm actually out there trying to make good pictures. Sure, the book does offer some good and specific advice on, e.g., choise of filters and types of film (although I shoot digital myself). But it does not really tell me how to practise and utilize and work with all these composition tools that I'm shown, so if I want to learn them I still have to figure out how to invent my own training. In stead the book shows what a good photographer can do once these tools have been learned.
Detailed and helpful October 15, 2004 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
I saw this book recommended on a photography site i was reading. Got the book and couldnt put it down. The contents are detailed and very helpful. Giving an insite into the composition of good photographes. I would recommend this too any person.
Thought Provoking Gem of a book June 19, 2004 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
I picked this book up whilst on my first photography course at school and it made me think in a completley different way not only in regards to photography but contextualising subject matter in all matters of study and framing material in the way that I wanted. Very well written and comprehensive....dont be drawn away by the outdated photos- the material is pricesless.
