The Zone System August 27, 2006 This is a first class explanation of the zone system by an author who has obviously had practical experience of every technique he describes. John Schaefer's descriptions are excellent but it is a complex subject and the book is for serious study and not for skimming through. My only worry is that is was written a long time ago and is there a more up to date view available?
The Zone System and general B&W Photography. August 25, 2006 It is a great pity that this superb book has presently gone out of print. It covers most aspects of black and white photography in an easily understood fashion. It is by far one of the best books I have read on photography and explains in simple English the sometimes complicated process of applying the Zone System to the genre. The author has a knack of crystalising and simplifying the sometimes involved methods of applying the Zone System formalised by his mentor, the great black and white photographer Ansel Adams. Well worth the search and price of a second hand copy!
