2 out of 5 stars Too much torture   August 16, 2008
Read the reviews and blurb and thought great just my kind of book. Bought all books in the trilogy. Whilst I loved the story and found the plot interesting I was bitterly let down by the author's morbid and worrying fasination with violence and torture. I felt there was no need to dedicate pages to the description of torture as it occured in all 3 books. Would have been my triology of the year so far had there been less torture.

2 out of 5 stars Dull   October 28, 2007
What is an interesting premise becomes a very dull book. I think it's because the characters and the setting is somehow very suburban, middle class and trite. Despite the violence, torture and deaths it all seems like an argument at a tupperware party. Even the King of the Mountains comes across as a busy CEO, who is playing at being a barbarian. It's all false and you just don't care....and I KNOW how this trilogy will end once the gift became apparent but I can't be bothered to read the rest to check if I'm right. There's much better fantasy out there.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fantasy!   July 3, 2007
I stumbled across this book and very quickly read all three. I loved Fionas writing, descriptions and insights. Such wonderful depth and feel she brings to all aspects of this story. Its gripping from the outset and you are immediately engrossed with the main characters and Fiona manages to gives amazing insight to each distinctive character. The challenges of the characters, the pace of the story and the ease with which you are transported into their life's and their world make this one of the best fantasy novels/trilogy I've read since I discovered Raymond E Feist 6 years ago. I just could not get enough. Highly recommended to anyone looking to read an epic adventure, with a great plot and fantastic characters. I Loved it - Treat yourself!

5 out of 5 stars brilliant read   January 13, 2007

I found this trilogy in a cheap book shop and I am so glad I bought it. as soon as i started reading it I was hooked. Although it might seem a bit too violent, especially at the beginning, I loved it, I'm a bit of a gory soul, but that still shouldn't deter anyone from reading it.
The Quickening is an excellent trilogy and definately well worth buying, I thought the ending to the third was a little childish, but I'm picky.
I've been reccommending that my friends buy it, and I'll share the same advice with you. Worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Better than expected!   January 5, 2007

I'd picked this book up a couple of times before and had been thinking about buying it for a while but something about it made me decide against it...
Anyhoo, my sister gave it me for Christmas and I have to say, overall, it was far better than I expected! In some places though, I thought it was a bit over the top, especially the bits concerning Myrren's torture... Call me squeamish but I seriously thought about putting it down there and then when I got to that bit.
All in all, I found this book quite refreshing, and thought it was a pretty original idea.
