4 out of 5 stars An interesting beginning   July 13, 2005

Long-time Sondheim fans may find Forum a departure from his usual multi-layered, complex and downright clever shows, but given that this is his first real show where he writes lyrics and music, it is a curiousity that is worth a look. This is a show with a rollicking plot, thanks to Bert Shevelove and his Roman predecessor, and is above all, fun. More reminiscent of farce than a straight play with music, the plot and dialogue blisters with inventiveness, and Sondheim's songs mirror this perfectly. Put these words in the hands of a master, and you are guaranteed enjoyable night - Zero Mostel, Frankie Howerd and Nathan Lane have shown how it should be done - stand back and marvel, and then look at the giant that Sondheim has become.
