A Handy Book for Birdwatching in the Field January 18, 2008

This book is exactly what it says on the "packet" so to speak. It is a "pocket" guide for birdwatcher's. Other reviewers, quite rightly have listed what they feel are the short-comings of the book. I am sure that is what the prospective purchaser wants to know and that is what a good review should do. Give the plus a minus points and allow the buyer to make up his own mind.
Some of the latest bird books are absolutely beautiful, and in some cases almost go as far as giving you the number of feathers on each species (only joking), but for some you would need a bigger car never mind a bigger pocket. These books are to be looked at in the comfort of your own home.
This book has a nice shape to it, long and narrow, a shape that can be accommodated in most pockets and on top of that it is an excellent book for identifying the different species. It does have some short falls but the bird illustrations are first class and there is certainly enough information between its covers to satisfy the reader's curiosity about any species. Plus the beauty of this book is you can have it with you at all times. After all, that elusive species will more than likely appear when you least expect it.

Wonderfully pocketable, great illustrations.
If honest go for the paperback edition, even lighter!

What a shame that this beautifully illustrated latest incarnation of the Birdwatcher's Pocket Guide has spoilt what was there before. The new symbols are hard to see, let alone decode. There is now NO indication of the size of each bird. The ring-necked parakeet is still not listed. And even the Mitchell-Beazley web-site address is wrong.

The 'large format' version of this work broke new ground - some of it controversial - but was far too large to use in the field. Like the original, this guide concentrates soley on the 'core' European species so all rarities are omitted. One can nitpick about additional birds that should have earnt a place, but the balance is about right. This pocket version is certainly the most portable of bird guides, but at what cost? Well, the typeface is miniscule, the text omits much that made the larger guide so interesting and the illustrations are somewhat dark. However, the quality of the text and plates shines through and makes it a very useful little guide. Despite the book's size the individual bird portraits are of a fair size and show most plumages. The mistaken omission of distribution maps that so flawed the original is continued and a new quirk has been added - no measurements are given only generalised statements about size! Had both been added then this would have been the guide of choice for those not wishing to lug around a 'full-sized' field guide> As it is just pencil in those missing measurements and you've got a first class guide ... if you know what to expect where!
