1 out of 5 stars Poor Raw   June 13, 2008
I read this book in about 4 hours. When I say 'read', I actually mean that I spent 4 hours ingesting Andy Rouse's self indulgent Wildlife portfolio. Andy manages to weave a woeful plug of his own work into every piece of advice on offer. Of all the pages, at least 50% of them are photo's. Andy's photo's, obviously. the text is large and each Chapter begins with a double page spread stating 'CHAPTER 3!!!! How to promote your own work in every way possible whilst camouflaging it in a self-help disguise'.
As you can tell, I wasnt impressed. It tells you what to do, but very little on how to do it! for example..ensure you manage your files. back up your data. buy Photoshop CS3.
It also includes some shamful plugs for companies who probably paid for this book to be produced, reminiscent of Wayne's World 2.
There is nothing in this book that you couldn't source in half an hours web hunting.
Save your money and buy a new SD card or something. Your time would be better spent shooting than reading this book.

2 out of 5 stars Good but not great   May 1, 2008

The book is nicely written, has fine images. It should only be targeted to inexperienced photographers and for those new to digital. Chapters that discuss RAW are not extensive and the book is actually a work-flow tutorial. Overall I was disappointed and felt that the title was bigger than the contents.

5 out of 5 stars A really worthwhile book on the basic concepts of RAW photography together with lots of good practical advice   March 18, 2008

I suppose that you could say that a technical manual is successful if it tells you things you didn't know and changes the way that you do things.
This book did precisely that for me. It is well laid out, thoughtful with lots of good photographic examples which are clearly explained to illustrate many of the points the book makes.

This book is to be recommended regardless of which software you use. It explains many of the points which are merely "assumed" and not covered by the specific software manuals. Use this in conjunction with your Lightroom/Picassa/IView/WhatHaveYou software manual and you won't need anything else. You will be glad that you read this one first

2 out of 5 stars A bit lightweight for an experienced Digital Photographer   January 13, 2008

Based on other reviews I was expecting a bit more from this book. I found that most of it went over familiar ground for a seasoned digital photographer. That's not to say that I didn't learn anything from the book, there were one or two nuggets of useful information that I stumbled across.....was just expecting a few more advanced techniques when shooting with RAW.
Great for beginners and like so many photography books, not so good if you have a bit more experience.

5 out of 5 stars Well written and easy to follow   December 2, 2007

Anyone who has tried digital photography will understand that its quite a technical subject and requires real practice and learning.

Most books on this subject seem quite overwhelming in their attempts to take the photographer through aspects of the digital age.

This book is written in a style that is easy to follow and takes you through understanding the features and setup of the camera and its use in the field, but especially the processing of the images from what type of software to use, what you can do with image processing and how to handle and store the image after processing.

If you are bewildered in any way in working with RAW workflow, then this is the book for you.
