5 out of 5 stars Must-have about landscape photography   March 2, 2006

There are several elements making this book outstanding. It shows 60+ photos from the author printed as big as one page, beautifully reproduced, that make many of us, I believe, look in wonder and also feel... miserable (will I ever take such a picture?). For each big picture, there is also a smaller one on the opposing page, of the same subject or location, but taken at a different time and possibly with a different composition. In the text accompanying each pictures pair, Joe Cornish describes the taking of them, the challenges, why he believes one is better than the other. He also addresses and illustrates his, how can I call it, philosophy and techniques of landscape photography, which I believe are lessons and inspiration to anybody interested in the subject. It struck me how he can achieve impeccable color balance with filters and film, no digital camera and RAW converter. Writing is terse, the tone is humble but you feel how passionate he is about photography, a pleasant reading.

5 out of 5 stars GREATNES!   February 21, 2006

I have bought a lot of photo books (landscapes) for inspiration...Cornish made me realize that im never gonna be a good landscape photographer myselfe. His work are not possible to describe in simple words. The qualety of the book print itselfe are also stunning (something a lot of photographers tend to forget). I only hope Cornish are working on a new book!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Magical   January 14, 2006

Joe Cornish is, without a doubt, the greatest living landscape photographer from United Kingdom, if not the world. The word 'magical' sums up the quality of the work in this book. For each photograph, Cornish also explains like a teacher how he achieved the 'magic' in each shot, e.g., the lighting conditions, the camera techniques he used, and so on. A very neat touch is that beside each main image, Cornish has a different, small shot of the exact same location taken under very different conditions, and again usefully explains why he prefers the main image.

Did I mention that the quality of the photography is absolutely stunning?

If you have any remote interest in photography, the countryside or even just things which look pretty, you must buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Top   January 29, 2004

I'm glad to see that all of the other reviews give Joe Cornish's book 5 stars and glowing reviews, because it means I don't have to explain it all. His images, stories, explanations and technical details are all an inspiration to a budding landscape photographer. Thanks Joe.

Brilliant purchase first as a facinating read, and description of the photographer's art, which, as is explained, is just a demanding and creative as any painter, author or muscian. Alongside are some absolutely stunning photographs, which would make the book worthlwhile buying alone, not to mention the interesting descriptions of the subjects involved.
Whether an expert photographer, an amateur, or even someone like me, who before the book had no idea about photography at all, it is as must have. Stunning puctures, and an interesting read
