Best textbook I've seen so far for this course October 15, 2008 Excellent textbook in its second edition which seems to offer the innovation that the new syllabus (AQA) demands, but which relies on a very well written and well-established first edition (and another excellent one for the old syllabus before that). Trustworthy and well-priced. Only three worries compared with other reviewers 1. the accompanying website access seems tremendously expensive at 10 per student, albeit a well developed resource. Clawing back the cost? 2. not every option, as with the older version , is covered, just the most popular. Fine for a College like ours (why pay for chapters never read), but less helpful for the independent learner, and forcing the exam board into a bit of a corner. 3. the cover is very like the first one - the "Second Edition" flash notwithstanding, many less scrupulous high street bookshops will still be trying to off-load their old stock on the unsuspecting. In spite of this, it is still the best AQA AS book around, so get it!
Still the best all round textbook for AS Sociology July 16, 2008 I have been teaching A Level Sociology for some years and although no single textbook offers complete coverage I have found that the Sociology in Focus series are easily the best of the bunch. This is the second edition of Sociology in Focus for AQA AS Level and builds on the successful format of the original text.
The book has been updated to take account of changes in AQA specification. In particular the chapter on education includes new material on Sociological Methods and Education with useful text boxes highlighting examples of studies of education using different methods. this should be really useful for students studying Unit 2. The book has been slightl;y updated to take account of new research and retains its attractive full colour format with a style and lay our which is very accessible for students new to Sociology. Each section has useful classroom activities which test students knowledge and understanding and my students find the glossaries of key concepts in each section useful when revising for exams.
An added feature is access to a website with advice from examiners and teaching materials. I haven't had a chance to explore this yet but preview material included with my sample copy looks promising and I am looking forward to using it with my students next term. Well done Causeway for producing another first class text.
Brilliant book April 29, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am a social work student and this was one of the books I purchased for my Social Policy module. I found this book informative and fun. I am a mature student but I think this book would be brilliant for old and young students alike. I really enjoyed this book and used references from it for my assignment. I would recommend this book to future students.
The best textbook for AS sociology September 25, 2005 I recommend this book to anyone taking AS sociology. It provides all the key information you need to pass the exam with excellent activities and summary sections at the end of each chapter. As a sociology teacher, I advise all my students to use this book as it is written in a way that people doing sociology for the first time will understand.
A text book to trust for AS December 19, 2004 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is highly derivative. It is based strongly on the older Sociology in Focus also from Causeway, and I've heard this mentioned as a criticism of it. This would be unfair. As an AS textbook for AQA I've not seen a better one so far. I've compared it with others on the market. I have more reservations about the A2 product, but virtually none about this. Michael Haralambos and Peter Langley have forged an incredibly helpful partnership, as with the latter's student handbook for the former's Sociology:Themes and Perspectives. They know what they're doing. You can too!
