THE ONLY BOOK YOU WILL NEED March 19, 2008 I am an English mum of 3 who lives abroad, so my children are taught in another language (Greek) at school. Although both myself and my husband are English and my children speak only English at home, it has been a struggle to teach my middle child to read and write. I have tried many systems; sticker books, ladybird books etc but to no avail. My mother read about this book in the press so I ordered it.
WELL! In 2 weeks, my son has come further than in the last year. It is amazing and I don't quite understand how, but he is almost reading!
This book has managed to teach my son how to make the leap from saying D O G to saying DOG - something that has always proved elusive until now. This book talks of 'blending' the sounds to make the words but does not expect the parent to explain this abstract term to their child; From chapter one onwards the child is simply asked to 'sound' a vowel and 2 or 3 consonants; these are added to in each chapter. Gradually my son has begun to blend without even realising it!
The book is laid out in chapters; each chapter takes us about one hour. It is all there for a busy mum; you only need the book, paper, pencil and a rubber. Simply read the opening notes for parents and away you go. I also appreciate the fact that the book does not assume that you (the parent) understand complicated grammar yourself.
I have already bought a second book for a friend in a similar situation and I would recommend this book to anyone. BUY IT!!!

This is not a book for teachers. There are much better phonic schemes available which are more varied and interesting for the learner and incorporate a range of learning styles. I have used a better synthetic phonic scheme since 1995 - with stunning results.I know that this particular scheme was available before that date. The Butterfly Book is more suited for parents wanting to help their child/ren. Reviewed by Head Teacher of a school graded 'outstanding' by OFSTED
Simply the best book for teaching kids to read! December 13, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Irina Tyk has taught my daughter and hundreds of others to read quickly from a young age with the principles laid out in this book. Not only do they pick up reading techniques quickly - based on the use of phonics - but their rapid progress means that they actually enjoy it! Success and confidence with reading from an early age equates to a better ability to communicate and develop a life-long love of reading. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
