5 out of 5 stars The key to enjoying British whales and dolphins   May 7, 2008
Dylan Walker has become well known as the co-author of the popular "Whales and Dolphins of the European Atlantic" (ISBN: 1903657008), a photographic guide to European Atlantic Cetaceans and a corresponding guide to the American Pacific cetaceans (ISBN: 1903657059). In this guide, he and co-author Alex Wilson focus on the British species to produce a guide to all our regularly seen species of whales, dolphins and porpoises combined with a directory of whale-watching resources.

After an introduction and some tips on how to observe these marine mammals, the first section is a field guide. It provides information on identification, behaviour, distribution and habitat as well as recommendations on the best places to encounter each species. The facing page presents a series of photographs illustrating each species as it is seen in real life.

The remaining 45 pages are a critical compilation of whale-watching venues and tours throughout Britain. Each site or boat trip is carefully evaluated, likely species are noted and there are details of cost, season and, of course, contact details. There is a final note on how to watch these animals responsibly - without endangering them.

This book should do much to promote whale-watching, perhaps helping to put it on a similar footing to birding. Anyone with an interest in these creatures, or indeed anyone searching for an unusual wildlife holiday will want to get hold of a copy.

5 out of 5 stars If you like Whales and Dolphins you will want this   November 16, 2007

Having been a big fan of whales and dolphins I always thought that to meet them in the wild I needed to travel overseas. Then I found this book and found out that these magnificent animals could be found in my back garden so to speak. If like me you want to go whale watching in GB or find out about the 20 or so whales or dolphins that visit our shores this is the book for you. As well as the useful id section with easy to use photographs of each species I liked the fact that the book reviewed over 20 whale and dolphin watching operators, some of whom I have since booked with and found their trips very good with a great sense of "edutainment". There was also useful information on what land based sites to visit and thank you authors for sharing some of your tips on photography it did mean that more of my pictures were in focus and not the usual dot on the horizon. All I can say is this book is A MUST HAVE!!
