A must-own for people interested in fresh comic work January 16, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book offers a huge array of comics, from a huge variety of authors - some professional, many not - and all with something to recommend them, be it beautiful artwork (such as the wonderful "Grounded" by Svetlana Chmakova); gripping plot (the post-apocalyptic survival story, "Last Man On Earth" by Mark Englert); wonderful characterisation (the thought-provoking; one-scene; one-conversation "Pictures of You" by Gibson Twist); or laugh-out-loud humour (the hilarious, but reliant on the reader getting the in-joke, "the Gaiman Variations" by T. Motley). Demonstrated are a variety of different ideas and formats, such as the moving, yet speech-free "Squinker" by Erin Mehlos; the amusing comic about writing a 24 hour comic, "24 Hour Comics Day" by Margreet de Heer; or the dreamlike, nostalgic "Sparkle in Her Eyes" by Lea Hernandez. The quality isn't always brilliant - either of style, or content - but there are some absolute gems, and with such a variety of comics, the reader can never be sure what's going to come next, and this leads to comics that can be truly gripping. Oh, and of course, at 24 pages (or less) each, each strip is readable in a few spare moments. For those seeking to see what fresh, (relatively) uncelebrated writers can do, 24 Hour Comics Day Highlights 2005 is just what the doctor ordered. Don't think about it, just buy the book!
