Breathtaking. A celebration of Alaska and photography and life! December 8, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This collection of pictures by acclaimed nature photographer Michio Hoshino is nothing leess than breeathtaking. This is a man who had no desire to simply document or record - the pictures tell a story in each one. As well as illustrating the relationship of Alaska's wildlife with it's surroundings, these magnificent images are nothing short of a celebration of life itself. If by a man's work, do ye know him, then Hoshino must have been a hell of a guy to know. Every plate in this collection displays much more than technical photographic excellence - they exude spirit, energy and sheer vitality.
Hoshino's genuis was tragically cut short when he was dragged from his tent and killed by a bear in Russia back in 1997, but it is testimony to his art that this relatively small collection can rightly claim to be his life's masterwork. It's that good.
I'd thoroughly recommend "The Blue Bear" by Lynn Schooler as a companion volume to this book. Schooler guided Hoshino on many of his Alaskan trips, and is an a unique position to give us an insight of the man behind the lens. If you only own one natural history photo book, make this it.
