Margaret Drivell! April 14, 2005 10 out of 15 found this review helpful
Rarely have I been so disappointed with a book. Having read and thoroughly enjoyed a number of the Gerald Durrell books, I looked forward to finding out a bit more about the other members of the family. Margaret possesses none of her brothers' style, or indeed any of her own. I would say this book is of no interest to anybody who did not know the family, and the editor could have saved a number of trees by shortening the entire book to one sentence, such as: "I am Gerald Durrell's sister and I was quite a cool landlady, but not a very interesting one." For goodness sake, put it back in the loft.
An entertaining addition to the Durrell saga March 16, 2002 13 out of 15 found this review helpful
I found this book to be amusing light reading, very much in the mould of Gerald Durrell's own writings. I cannot help but feel, however, that it is feeding off public fascination with the Durrell family rather than being written in an independent voice. The very title of the book is designed to appeal to the people who read and loved My Family and Other Animals, or Beasts, Birds and Relatives. Margaret Durrell does not have the fluid writing style and spontaneity that is such an important feature of Gerald (or Lawrence) Durrell's books. For all that, however, it is a good read and a necessary addition to the Durrelmaniac's library.
