5 out of 5 stars I recommend this book to everyone!   June 26, 2003

This is without a doubt one of the best books I have ever read. It was bought for me by my boyfriend who really loves it and I read it despite thinking it looked a bit naff. I wasn't sure about the first couple of chapters but I persevered and I am so glad I did!

Ocean Warrior is a true story and throughout keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. There is loads of action all the way through but at the same time the book is extremely moving and made me question what exactly is really important in life.

This book really shows how one person can make a HUGE difference in the world if they have the courage and conviction to really take a stand for what they believe in, are prepared to challenge rather than accept injustices and not let seemingly insurmountable obstacles stand in their way.

This book is truly inspiring and I recommend it to everyone.

One time founder member of Greenpeace he became quickly disillusioned once they became more involved in internal in-fighting, politics and self promotion whilst the original issues were pushed onto the backburner.

He went on to raise capital and crew-members for various boats and expeditions including the ramming of whaling boats such as the infamous Sierra (a priority goal of the anti whaling movement) the Sierra technically never existed because they were fishing and selling on their catch illegally. She was a modern day ghost ship rarely using radio or advertising her presence. Believed to be responsible for some 25,000 individual whale kills she was considered a fair target for a declaration of war..

After locating and ramming the Sierra the Portuguese authorities seized Watson’s first boat nonetheless, a Hull trawler which was named Sea Sheppard. She was unilaterally awarded it to the owners of Sierra without trial or discussion – Watson reaction was to scupper her in order to prevent her being used as a whaling boat he then fled Portugal.

An interesting chapter on limpet mines being used to sink whalers. From a political perspective it would appear that certain governments were happy to lend there support albeit wrapped within a cloak and dagger scenario.

The account of the whale boat packed to the brim with whale meat but her crew can’t resist taking one more whale – This leviathan proves to be the ships downfall as she is dragged to the bottom along with her Captain still onboard.

Just started the chapter where he and his crew have entered Russian waters in order to single-handedly invade Russia. Siberia to be precise….

The action and adventure is interspersed with the reasoning behind Watson’s motives and beliefs and well worth a read.

Paul Watson is one of the few hominids on this planet who actually knows what he's doing with his life. Over the last two hundred years humanity's impact upon Gaia has become exponential. Only people with his courage, compassion and vision offer us any hope. "Whether 'tis better in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing end them" -Shakespeare

5 out of 5 stars Captain Paul Watson is my voice where I have none   August 24, 1998

People are very quick to make judgement of others. Captain Watson should be treated with utmost respect. As in any great story the facts are embellished to make things interesting. And this story is a GREAT STORY. Any person who has a concern for our oceans and marine life should read this book. It is an eye opening experience. Captain Watson stands to be heard, and where I have no voice he will be mine and I will be heard. Captain Watson is truly an ocean warrior.

The previous reviewer on this page can't be serious. I can't imagine picking up this book with the idea of being entertained with Great Literature. It doesn't pretend to be; Paul Watson doesn't worry about being any kind of Author. But the book reads well enough, and anyways it is the content and moral force behind the words and behind the actions that matter to me. Paul has been my hero for twenty-one years, ever since he was kicked out of Greenpeace for trying to stop a thug from whacking a baby seal on the head. The purpose of this book is too give light to his efforts in this world; if a few facts are wrong - big f***ing deal! So get a copy editor! Three cheers for Paul Watson - and may the rest of us wake up in time to follow in his footsteps!
